The Ultimate Guide: Choosing Fabrics for Your Activewear Line

Activewear has become a staple in wardrobes, with more and more people turning to comfortable, functional clothing for their everyday activities. However, with so many options out there, it can be difficult to know where to start when it comes to choosing the right fabrics for your activewear line. In this guide, we'll take you through everything you need to know to make the best choices for your brand and your customers.

When selecting fabrics for your activewear line, there are several factors to keep in mind. These include:

  • Comfort and fit: Sometimes your customers will be wearing your activewear during physical activities, so it's essential that your fabrics are comfortable and fit well.

  • Moisture management: Sweating is a natural part of physical activity, so your fabrics should be able to wick moisture away from the skin and dry quickly.

  • Durability: Activewear must be able to withstand frequent use and washing without losing its shape or function.

  • Stretch and flexibility: Your fabrics should be able to move with the body during activity without losing its shape or integrity.

  • Breathability: Good airflow is important to prevent overheating during exercise. It’s also ideal that fabric has breathability in warm climates as well as for those hot summer months.

  • UV protection: If your customers are likely to be outdoors, it's a good idea to offer fabrics with UV protection.

  • Sustainability: More and more consumers are looking for sustainable and eco-friendly options, so consider this when selecting fabrics.

  • Cost: Your fabrics need to be cost-effective, while still meeting the above requirements.

Types of Fabrics for Activewear

There are many types of fabrics that work well for activewear. These include:

  • Polyester: A popular choice for activewear due to its moisture-wicking properties and durability.

  • Nylon: A strong and durable fabric that is often used in leggings and other stretchy garments.

  • Spandex/Lycra: A stretchy and flexible fabric that is most likely blended with other materials for added support.

  • Cotton: A natural, breathable fabric that is comfortable to wear but may not be ideal for high-intensity workouts.

  • Bamboo: A sustainable and eco-friendly fabric that is moisture-wicking and breathable.

  • Tencel: A sustainable fabric made from wood pulp that is soft, breathable, and moisture-wicking.

  • Merino wool: A natural fabric that is warm, moisture-wicking, and odor-resistant.

  • Recycled fabrics: These can be made from a variety of materials and are environmentally friendly.

Pros and Cons of Each Fabric Type

Of course, each fabric type has its own advantages and disadvantages. Here are a few examples:

  • Polyester: Pros include good moisture-wicking properties, durability, and cost-effectiveness. While cons include a lack of breathability and sustainability concerns.

  • Bamboo: Pros are sustainability, breathability, and moisture-wicking properties. Cons can be a tendency to shrink and wrinkle in the wash.

  • Merino wool: Pros would be warmth, odor resistance, and moisture-wicking properties. Cons might be represented by high cost and a tendency to shrink in the wash.

Care and Maintenance of Activewear Fabrics

To keep your activewear fabrics looking and performing their best, it's important to follow proper care and maintenance instructions. These may include:

  • Washing instructions: Use a gentle cycle with cold water and mild detergent. Avoid fabric softeners and bleach.

  • Drying instructions: Hang or lay flat to dry, avoiding high heat.

  • Ironing instructions: Generally, activewear fabrics should not be ironed.

  • Storage recommendations: Store activewear in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Innovations and Trends in Activewear Fabrics

The activewear industry is constantly evolving, and new innovations and trends in fabrics are emerging all the time. Some of the most exciting developments are:

  1. Sustainable fabrics: As consumers become more environmentally conscious, sustainable fabrics such as recycled polyester and organic cotton are becoming more popular.

  2. Smart fabrics: These fabrics incorporate technology to monitor things like heart rate, body temperature, and muscle activity, allowing wearers to track their performance and recovery.

  3. Anti-microbial fabrics: These fabrics are treated with special chemicals to prevent the growth of bacteria and odors, keeping activewear fresher for longer.

  4. Seamless fabrics: Seamless construction eliminates uncomfortable seams and stitching, making activewear even more comfortable to wear.

  5. Compression fabrics: Compression garments are designed to support and stabilize muscles during exercise, improving performance and reducing the risk of injury.

Tips for Choosing the Right Fabric for Your Activewear Line

  1. Determine your brand's values and priorities: Before you begin researching fabrics, it's important to determine your brand's values and priorities. Are you focused on sustainability and eco-friendliness? Are you targeting a specific market segment, such as runners or yogis? Understanding your brand's values and priorities will help you choose fabrics that align with your vision and resonate with your target market.

  2. Understand your target market: Knowing your target market is essential to choosing the right fabrics for your activewear line. Different activities and climates require different fabrics, so it's important to recognize your target market's needs and preferences. For example, runners may prefer lightweight, moisture-wicking fabrics, while yoga practitioners may prefer stretchy, breathable fabrics.

  3. Test the fabrics in real-world situations: Once you've identified potential fabrics for your activewear line, it's important to test them in real-world situations. This will give you a better understanding of how the fabrics perform during physical activity and how they hold up over time.

  4. Consider the manufacturing process: The manufacturing process can also play a role in your choice of fabrics. Some fabrics may require special equipment or techniques to manufacture, which can impact the overall cost and production timeline of your activewear line. It's important to consider the manufacturing process when choosing fabrics to ensure that they can be produced efficiently and cost-effectively.

How it all started

It all started with a swollen face and a sewing machine.

While recovering from just having had my wisdom teeth removed, with two bulky ice packs bandaged around my expanding cheeks, I fell in love with sewing.

From that moment on a fire was lit within me, and I would never see my world the same.

Fast forward years later and suddenly I woke up in a corporate cubicle, staring at an excel spreadsheet, and trying really hard to be someone I wasn’t. Like REALLY HARD.

But as the years went on, my desire to sew & create continued to grow. And yet I continued to try on different personas and search for that perfect position within the corporate world that would fulfill me.

Then finally it hit me. I realized that I was never going to find that dream position in the corporate world. I had to create it.

So with just a small whisper of a belief that it just MIGHT be possible for me to start my own business, and live life on my own terms, I quit my stable corporate job.

I had such little belief in myself that during my exit interview I even said to my boss, “if my business doesn’t work out within the next few months, will you take me back?” How sad!

Thankfully I quickly realized that listening to that small whisper within, and betting on myself, was (and still is) the absolute BEST decision I could have ever made.
